Prague Travel Guide for backpackers

This really beautiful city has some amazing architecture that has withstood the ravages of time for the past six hundred years, and still retains its medieval ambience while enjoying an economic boom and drawing visitors from around the world.

With a young, upbeat social life Prague is a great place to meet twenty-something's to enjoy and explore the city with, including its pumping nightlife.

DAILY BUDGET in PRAGUE - If you are prepared to stay at cheap hostels or camp sights, and either cook your own food or buy from stand-up cafes and stalls, or pubs, it is just possible to survive on US$14 a day, with meals from US$2 to US$6, and accommodation starting at about US$11 and climbing.

Stare Mesto (Old Town) - The crazy maze of narrow, winding streets and confusing babble of shoppers and rubber-necking tourists checking out the markets, shops, pubs and restaurants make the Old Town the heartbeat of Prague.

Staromestske namesti (Old Town Square) - This is a spectacular square where tourists flock to check out the famous astronomical clock and absorb the history of this beautiful city.

Prazsky hrad (Prague Castle) - Check out 1000 years of history in this massive ancient castle that takes pride of place in a city of incredible sights.

Sate - Located at Pohorelec 3, with food that is somewhat Indonesian and very filling, the noodle dishes served here are simple, satisfying and cheap.

U Bakalare - Located at Celetna 13, this is the place for typical Czech fry-ups, cheap self-service and a place o meet lots of other hungry tourists.

Damuza - Located at Retezova 10, cheap student chow and draught beer is served in this laid back cafe that is part of the drama school.

Albio - Not very cheap for Prague, but still cheap. They serve veggie food with NO sugar and NO artifical ingredients. It's amazing -the best eatery in Prague. They also have Bernard Beer - nicest brew I've had in my life!!

Doba - Small restaurant on Namesti Miru. Pick your main course, sauce and side dish individually and make your own mix. Affordable prices. My favorite: steamed broccoli, blue cheese sauce and potatos. Address: Namesti Miru.

La Creperie - Excellent French-Hungarian crepérie. Here you can listen to chansons while enjoying the crepés. Very cosy. Location: Janovského 4.

U hrocha (The Hippo) - Located at Thunovska 10, and serving cheap chow and beer, this is an authentic Czech pub that is open from noon-11.30pm.

Jo's Bar - Located at Malostranske namestí 7, this is where all expats and backpackers seem to congregate.

Legends - Located at Tyn (Ungelt), this is not the place for a quiet quick one, with its rowdy, rumbustious crowd of expats, big screen TV, and disco theme nights.

The Black ox - U Cervenho Vola (The black ox) is located in Hradcany in the Loretanska street. This is a authentic czech pub in great surrondings. Open from 10 am
