Recife Travel Guide for backpackers


Recife's is situated behind a long and protective coastal reef. It is a major port city. High rises, colonial churches, and markets quilt the city with a mix of old and new. Often called the Venice of Brazil for its many canals, bridges, and tiny one-way streets, A wonderful city in which to wander about, letting chance provide a memorable discovery or two.  

DAILY BUDGET in RECIFE - If you're travelling on buses every couple of days, staying in hotels for $10 a night, and eating in restaurants or drinking in bars every night, $40 is a rough estimate of what you would need. If you plan to lie on a beach for a month, eating frugally, $25 would be enough. Prices for accommodation increase 25-30% from December to February

Museu do Homem do Nordeste - (east of the city center along Avenida 17 de Agosto). Three sections: anthropology, popular art with superb ceramic figurines; and a pharmacy exhibit about the region's herbal/indigenous medicine.

Galeria de Arte Metropolitana - ( Rua da Aurora 265) Look at paintings by renowned artists.

The Casa da Cultura de Recife - (across the street from Recife Metro Station) Once huge, colonial style prison. Now home to many craft and souvenir shops, traditional music and dance shows.

Polo Pina - This area is a popular nightlife spot with many bars and restaurants.

O Lacador - (Rua Visconde de Jequitinhonha, 138) The most affordable churrasco buffet in Recife. You get what you pay for.

Dao Joao - (Rua do Apolo, 134) - Portuguese food.

Gracas - ( a short taxi ride northwest of the center) The major nightlife center - packed with bars and nightclubs.

Cravo e Canela - (Rua das Creoulas 260), a suave and relaxed bar.

New Hits - (Rua Gervasio Fioravante 111), a very active dance club.
