Rome Travel Guide for backpackers

This incredible, breathtaking, awesome place has so much to offer that it is hard to know where to start. Thousands of years of history lie beneath your feet, ancient architecture stands before your eyes, and the sheer romance of the city fill your senses utterly.

But there is also the wine, the food, and the sunshine. Drink your wine in a Piazzo designed by Michelangelo, eat pizza at the bronzed foot of a god, and at night mix with hip young Romans who understand the meaning of La Dolce Vita.

DAILY BUDGET in ROME - Italy, like most beautiful things, comes at a price, but if backpackers stay in hostels, do some self catering, and try bumming their booze instead of buying, then just maybe they can come out on US$50 a day, but for a more memorable holiday of comfortable beds, restaurant food and visiting decent museums and attractions, then budget on nothing less than US$150 upwards a day.

Castel Sant' Angelo - Now a museum, but originally built as Emperor Hadrian's mausoleum, this circular building is reached by crossing a bridge guarded by angels, and has underground passages leading to the Vatican.

Capitoline Hill - The geographical centre of Rome and once the seat of government in ancient Rome, it is best seen at night when it is deserted and one can imagine the ghosts of Caesars' wandering about its statues and temples.

Via dei Coronari - This street is filled with shops selling antiques and all sorts of interesting stuff and is one of the city's best streets for window shopping and browsing.

Capitoline Hill - The geographical centre of Rome and once the seat of government in ancient Rome, it is best seen at night when it is deserted and one can imagine the ghosts of Caesars' wandering about its statues and temples

Villa Borghese - This is a very big park on a hill. Its the most relaxing place in Rome! Walk the steps from the Piazza del Popolo, or from the top of Spanish Steps or end of Via Veneto.
Add your favourite free attraction!

Brek - At Largo di Torre Argentina 1, this self service restaurant provides good fresh food, either as a snack or full meal.

Antico Forno - At Via delle Muratte, just by the magnificent Trevi Fountain, the Antico Forno is everything to the hungry backpacker selling fresh bread, groceries, or pizza and it is open on Sundays.

Il Leoncino - At Via del Leoncino 28, pizzas baked in wood ovens are the best in town.

Da Giovanni - Traditional trattoria in Rome, very cheap! You can try: Via della Lungara (trastevere) it has a green sign.

Chinese Restaurant Jing Yuan - Not Italian, but great cheap real Chinese food! They have a 4-course-menu for 7,80 per person! For every course you can choose between different things. Near Trevi fountain, Via S Vincenzo.

Piccolo Buco - You must come here to eat great real Italian cuisine!! Bruschetta's for 2,50, pasta's for 6-8 euro's and also meat-courses for little money. Near the Trevi fountain, in Via del Lavatore, a cosy narrow street.

The Old bell - It was incredible this bar restaurant close at 5 in the morning. Food is cheap and very good, staff is so kind and they have a good choise of beers and cocktail.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

The Drunken Ship - At Campo de' Fiori 20-21, this is a very popular and happening place for foreign students, and young Romans, with great music.

L'Hangar - At Via in Selci 29, this has been a well known hangout for gays since forever, as well as the least expensive, and is jam packed with young people every night.

Box 103 - This comfy pub in Prati, on Via Germanico 103, is cheap and offers good beer, and that's from a German. One night I went there, they also had a jazz concert at around dinner time, but without entrance fee, which I like. :-)

Living Room - Cool, moderm desgined disco club, open until late. BIg lounge area and good cocktails (aprox cost 7 euro). Popular DJ's, House music, Alternative, R&B & Lounge. Address: Via Solferino 9 A/B, Rome, Italy

Druid's Rock - A great Irish pub, a lot of English people come here. 5 euro's for a pint, several beers on tap. It's near the Santa Maria Maggiore, Piazza dell' Esquilino.

Bar San Callisto - this bar is by far the greatest in trastevere, the atmosphere at night is incredible when it gets so packed that people pour out onto the nearby plaza and have to start using parked cars and scooters as table and seats.
