Salamanca Travel Guide for backpackers


In Salamanca's urban centre, old and new, culture and work, blend together seamlessly, allowing visitors and residents alike to enjoy the city fully. There are continuous alterations and reforms being carried out adapting the older styles to contemporary tastes, which make the city a desirable place to visit.

The tourist district stretches from San Marcos Church, in Zamora Street, to the Puente Romano. It is a circular area, full of shops and businesses, especially in streets such as Zamora, Toro and Rua Mayor. Art galleries, museums, exhibition halls, cinemas, theatres, auditoriums, places full of history and lots of tourist sights abound here.
 

DAILY BUDGET in SALAMANCA - If you're mainly there to do some sightseeing, t is possible to get by on a daily budget of US$40. If you want to experience more of what Slamanca has to offer and stay in bigger hotels, a daily budget of around US$90 is recommended.

Casa Museo Unamuno - Located at Calle de Libreros, this is where the poet and philosopher Miguel de Unamuno lived from 1900 to 1914 in this 18th-century home beside the university. Here he wrote many of the works that made him famous. You can see some of his notebooks and his library, along with many personal mementos.

Convento de San Esteban - St. Stephen's Convent is one of the most dramatic of all the old religious sites in Salamanca. The golden-brown Plateresque facade of this late Gothic church competes with the cathedral in magnificence. Located at Plaza del Concilio de Trento, this is a site not to be missed.

Museo Art Nouveau-Art Deco - This museum contains more than 1,500 pieces, all part of the collection of the Manuel Ramos Andrade Foundation. From the late 19th century to the 1930s, the collection includes bronze and marble figurines, jewelry, furniture, paintings, and a collection of some 300 porcelain dolls.

El Candil - This Castilian tavern is very popular with the locals and university crowd. The food is great and the prices affordable. It is located in the centre of town right off the Plaza Mayor and has been in business for 6 decades. This is a great place to sample the local cuisine.

Trento - This restaurant's decor was inspired by 19th-century France, with old rugs and paintings of Parisian street scenes. You can savor the subtle balance of imaginative flavors in dishes like a heart of lettuce served with filet of whitefish and fresh vegetables.

Restaurant Chapeau - Set on the main street of Salamanca in a stone-sided building erected around 1900, this restaurant offers a more conservative Castilian cuisine. On the menu you'll find a variety of meat and seafood disches.

El Bamboo - the best pincho morunos (marinated pork kabobs) in town, as well as a great variety of tortillas espanolas.

Belle Epoque - Located at 55 Paseo de Carmelitas, this bar is famous for being the place in where the best-looking people in Salamanca go to listen to the latest hits, including Spanish and Latin music, and mett friendly people. In summer you can sit outside on the sidewalk terrace and relax in the warm weather, watching the people go by.

El Callejon - Found at Gran Via no. 66, this club is popular with football players, bullfightersand their supporters. The club is famous for organizing theme parties based on famous groups or characters, recently it held a party dedicated to the Beatles and Rolling stones. The interior is designed to look like a typical village street.

Camelot - This is the most famous nightclub in Salamanca and is very popular with the foreigners that study at the local university. It is located in the centre of town at 3 Bordadores, in a pedestrian area. The decor is that of a medieval castle, with passageways, turrets, dungeons and knights in shining armor. There is dance floor on the ground floor and a quieter bar on the first floor.
