Salvador de Bahia Travel Guide for backpackers

A fascinating and vibrant city loaded with historic buildings. Known for its many wild festivals. Carnaval in Salvador is justly famous and attracts hordes of tourists. Most visitors to Salvador get to know two areas: Pelourinho and Barra. Lots of fantastic beaches.

DAILY BUDGET in SALVADOR DE BAHIA - If you're travelling on buses every couple of days, staying in hotels for $10 a night, and eating in restaurants or drinking in bars every night, $40 is a rough estimate of what you would need. If you plan to lie on a beach for a month, eating frugally, $25 would be enough. Prices for accommodation increase 25-30% from December to February.

Garcia - an interesting and lively neighbourhood with street music on Saturday nights. A huge change from the usual tourist areas.

Ribeira - (on the bay side of the city) A long stretch of beach and little bars. Endless streams of people eating, drinking, listening to music, dancing, and socializing.

Sete Portas - (on the water beyond the ferryboat terminal) An “open air" market with local life and colour.

Restaurant Extudo - (Rua Lidio Mesquito 4) - Inexpensive but popular little bar and restaurant serving a wide range of food.

Casa do Benin - (Padre Agustinho Gomes 17) Excellent, reasonably priced African food.

Aquarius Restaurant - (Rua Ribeiro dos Santos 37). Inexpensive Pelourinho restaurant. Has a lovely view over the old city.

Pelourinho - Salvador's most distinctive nightlife is to be found in Pelourinho. The area is always lively, with lots of bars where you can sit and while the evening away.

Rock in Rio - (Av. Otavio Mangabeira 6000) - Live music - mainly popular Brazilian and rock.

Praca da Reggae - plays great live music at weekends and has a good bar.
