San Antonio TX Travel Guide for backpackers

The eighth largest city in the US, San Antonio is an attractive place with a largely Hispanic population and a rich history that goes back to its founding in 1691 by Spanish missionaries. San Antonio has lived through one of the most historic battles of Texas history, that of the Alamo in 1836, and claims to be the ‘birthplace of the revolution’ after Mexican General Santa Anna, destroyed a group of Texan volunteers in bid to stop the Anglo-Americans from gaining too much ground.

DAILY BUDGET in SAN ANTONIO TX - Do your own catering. $100 to $120 will give you a comfortable bed in a motel and some decent meals at restaurants and still leave some over for paying attractions.

King William Historic Area - Elegant Victorian mansions and cool leafy shade symbolise this pretty 19th century neighbourhood.

River Walk - Downtown, San Antonio. Talk a stroll down ‘Paseo del Rio’, where stone pathways line the banks of the San Antonio River, and wandering mariachi bands play and restaurants, bars, and hotels are located.

La Villita - Southern Downtown. This block of buildings, has been carefully restored, with some adobe structures that date from the 1820’s, and houses craft shops and restaurants.
