Sao Paulo Travel Guide for backpackers

This dynamic city has a population of about 17 million people and has seen such cultural diversity that it has become the home of the most cultured and educated middle class in Brazil. Other than that it can be fun to explore, especially if you get to know someone who will guide you around the attractions and nightlife that is as pumping and energetic as only big city nightlife can be.

DAILY BUDGET in SAO PAULO - For a quiet holiday of self discipline and careful planning a canny backpacker can get by on US$20 to US$25 a day, but you could stay in hotels, eat well, and visit quite a few bars for roughly US$40 a day.

Mercado Municipal - Stock your pantry with fruit, vegetables, and cheese, at this extraordinary market and at the same time study the history of Brazil… only in Sao Paulo.

The Parque da Luz - This Victorian public garden was established in 1800, and is a refreshing green area in a bustling city.

Carnival Sao Paulo - Held in February every year, Sao Paulo's carnival has a more authentic feel, with fewer tourists than Rio's.
Add your favourite free attraction!

McDonalds, Pizza Hut - For homesick travellers nothing beats a Big Mac or pizza from a familiar face.

Ponto Chic - At Largo do Paissandu 27, Centro, here the hungry backpacker can grab a traditional Bauru sandwich, absolutely divine and made with roast beef, salad and melted cheese.

Tia Carly - At Alameda Ribeirão Preto 492, Bela Vista, fill the aching void in your stomach with some superb but cheap home cooking.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Bar Brahma - At the corner of Avenida São João and Avenida Ipiranga, Centro, enjoy cheap beer and the atmosphere of one of Sao Paulo's oldest bars.

Barnaldo Lucrecia - At Rua Abilio Soares 207, Paraiso, and a young crowd flocks to this bright yellow house for fun and live music.

Ritz - At Alameda Franca 1088, Cerqueira Cesar, this quiet restaurant does a bit of a Cinderella thing at night by turning into a lively bar and is very popular with the young gay crowd.
Add your favourite bar or club!
