Sardinia Travel Guide for backpackers

Rugged and beautiful, Sardinia is for the adventurous. Very hot summers and icy winter winds are of the most extreme in the Mediterranean. The coastline is awesome and the craggy mountains have many caves. Ancient olive groves, golden wheat fields in summer and large flocks of sheep are some of the unforgettable sights of this lovely island. Reaching Sardinia can be difficult, ferries and planes are packed in summer. Getting around the island is another challenge as public transport is unreliable and very slow. All the same, Sardinia is a never to be forgotten experience.

DAILY BUDGET in SARDINIA - Sardinia is not geared for the budget conscious but you could scrape by at USD80 a day. USD100 will make your life a lot easier.

Oliena to Dorgali - for the keen hiker, a trail starting halfway between Oliena to Dorgali. Savour the scents from the thorny shrubs. Wear strong shoes and thick socks.

La Maddalena - Caprera, Tavolara and Budelli, all around Costa Smeralda - where the rich and famous gather - beautiful rose coloured beaches.

Le Nuraghe - Archeological sites - not to be missed. Check out the three story tower built 3500 years ago. Be sure to go in the mornings only and it's closed on Sundays.
