Dakar - This exciting city of noise, chaos and crowds is the wildly throbbing pulse of the nation. There are some amazing sights in Dakar including the Palais Presidentiel with its magnificent gardens, and the collection of African artifacts from scary masks to traditional musical instruments, but the main pleasure in visiting the city is to watch the passing parade of lively, in-your-face people going about their daily business.
Cap Skiring - The hot sandy beaches of Cap Skiring is where the tourist crowd congregates to soak up Africa's sun, but if hordes of bright pink travellers is not your scene then check out Diembering, a few miles away where the beach is quieter and not so redolent of sun-screen and tanning lotion.
Kaolack - The handsome Moroccan style mosque and the second largest covered market in Africa in this lively city is worth checking out, if only because Kaolack is off the beaten track to most tourists and therefore what you see is real with no hype or obvious touristy spin.
St-Louis - Settled in 1659 by the French, St-Louis has some fine examples of colonial architecture in the impressive old houses and the 18th century governor's palace, and to walk the streets of this old city is to step into a time warp.
Ziguinchor - A backpacker's city of cheap eats and lodgings, Ziguinchor is one of the least expensive places to visit in Senegal, and has some great arts and crafts on offer. |

DAILY BUDGET in SENEGAL - With budget meals in the US$2-8 range and cheap lodgings a mere US$6-15, Senegal is not that expensive and the hard pressed backpacker will find a daily budget of US$15-20 a day, will cover basic costs. |
During November through to February the weather is cool and dry, but the harmattan winds blow off the Sahara bringing dust and sand on its dry breath. February to April is best for scuba diving, and the birds migratory season is over November-to-April, a special event for bird-watchers.
Being mainly Islamic most of the celebrations in Senegal centre around such events as Moulid an-Nabi which celebrates the prophet Mohammed's birthday around May, and Grand Magal pilgrimage and celebration, held in Touba 48 days after Ras as-Sana in March. Of international interest is the 10,000km/6200miles motor race, the Paris-Dakar Rally, finishes in Dakar around the second week of January |
