Shanghai Travel Guide for backpackers

Shanghai is China’s centre of commerce, industry and finance. It is also the biggest city on earth and has the distinction of a colonial past that is still evident today. Shanghai was the centre of European imperialism in mainland China but the arrival of the communists changed all that and Shanghai became run down, almost forgotten. Today Shangai pulsates with dreams and hopes of a future that the whole nation is embracing. This modern city is indeed one of the world's greatest capitals.

DAILY BUDGET in SHANGHAI - Shanghai, like any other big city, has much to offer but you need to shop around for the best bargains, USD50 a day is OK.

The Jade Buddha Temple – Shanghai’s best-known Buddhist temple. Five jade Buddha statues from Burma was the beginning of this temple in 1882. Destroyed by fire in 1918 it has been rebuilt and is still a tourist draw.

Oriental Pearl TV Tower – Shanghai’s great new landmark in a unique design is the world’s 3rd tallest TV Tower. Situated in Pudong Park it’s a great place to visit.

Yuyuan Garden – Pan Yunduan started this classical Chinese garden in 1559, to please his father. The construction took almost 20 years. These five acres of peaceful garden draw many visitors.

Wagas – Citic Square – You can sit in the open-air garden and enjoy their breakfasts. The muffins are cool and the price is alright. The atmosphere is good at this American food outlet.

Little Lamb – Old Town – Well known for its Hotpot a favourite with the Chinese and becoming a favourite with travellers as well. Good food and cheap, what could be better.

Yonghe King – Around Town – Chain food restaurants all over Shanghai. Traditional Chinese food eateries serving breakfasts that draw the crowds. And you won’t go broke!

Toco Popo - Located on MaoMing Road (bar street), next to Pegasus (huai hai road), Tongren Road (bar strip)...Nachos!!!! Everything is cheap and very tasty, price range (15-40RMB). Enjoy...

Nangka Cafe - Offer sandwiches with home-made bread. Owned by Malaysian, it has some really great items like curry chicken sandwich, banana square, yellow smoothie...delicious and CHEAP. A small but cosy and clean. Plus Internet is FREE.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Hard Rock Cafe – Nanjing Xilu – The latest loud DJ’s, live pop and rock music and spans of Chinese yuppies, this and more at Shanghai’s American dive.

Cash Box – Wulumugi Lu- The giant cash box in Shanghai is always busy. There are several of these KTV bars in town and they’re very popular.

Malone’s American Cafe – Tongren Lu – A sports bar with TVs broadcasting sports events. Pool tables and darts and live Chinese bands playing rock is what you get at Malone’s.

Arch Bar & Café - Stylishly designed sleek interior, laid-back vibe, and FREE unlimited Net access (wired and wireless). Good food at reasonable price and impressive selections of imported beers and the best coctails in shanghai!

TangHui - Xingfu Road...near Fahuazhen Road. Great little bar, interior: antique chinese, opium beds, little stage with local and foreigners jamming on a daily basis.

Tanghui - Tanghui is definitely the coolest bar in Shanghai, and I hear that it will re-open on May 12 in the new location of Huaihai Road and Huating Road; right next to the Changshu Road Subway (exit 1).

Blue Frog - There are quite a few Blue Frogs around Shanghai but my favourite is the one in Tongren great atmosphere and the blue cheeseburger is to die for

O'Malley's Irish Pub - O'Malley's has great atmosphere for watching sports on their big screen TV, excellent live music, good food and a nice garden to relax.

Tanghui - Tanghui - that great little bar - is now a great big bar @ 85 Huating Road (cnr of Huaihai Road). 4 floors and 2 seperate stages, means two bands can play concurrently. Beer 30 RMB for pint; 20 RMB for bottles.

Tanghui Bar - Dudes! I was in town - Shanghai, that is - for 2 nights, and on a bloody Tuesday and Wednesday and this bar rocked. Wednesday was an open mike night, with some interesting characters.
