Singapore Travel Guide for backpackers

This city has met the new millennium head on, and is a masterpiece of modern technology and skyscrapers of gleaming glass and concrete. Known throughout the world for its cleanliness and crime free streets Singapore is still a city of the people, and what a mix of people at that. Chinese, Malay, and Indian cultures paint the city with bright influences of feng shui, the call of the Imam from the Sultan Mosque, and sari's and Hindu gods.

Search all cities in Singapore

Arab St - This is the Muslim centre and here you can haggle over amazingly varied goods, from silks, batiks from Indonesia, hajj caps, basket ware, to rosaries and much, much more.

Chinatown - The wonderful thing about the Chinese is that they never change, no matter what country they live in, and they always stamp their unique influence on their corner, street or city, wherever it is, and in Singapore Chinatown is it's heart.

Colonial Singapore - Raffles Hotel, the Empress Place Building, St Andrew's Cathedral, and many other reminders of colonial rule can be found in Central Singapore.

Jurong -Tourism raises its tacky head in Haw Par Villa, a Chinese mythological theme park, in the industrial and housing area of Singapore. There is also has a wonderfully landscaped and beautiful Jurong Bird Park, and Chinese Garden in the area if your delicate aesthetic senses are offended by Haw Par Villa.

Sentosa Island - This is the wow part of Singapore, a huge park with walks, beaches, aquariums, museums, and whole lot more entertainment for everyone, from families to loners, and is the chief attraction of the city. It also has luxury hotels, a camping ground, and hostel.

DAILY BUDGET in SINGAPORE - Singapore is not cheap, but if you don't mind standing with your nose pressed against the glass drooling at the tempting goodies inside shops instead of rushing in and flinging your cash around, it is possible to come out on about US$30 a day, if you stay in hostels and eat really cheaply. For the healthier sum of US$88-90 a day you could stay in fair to middling hotels and enjoy the divine cuisine of the country at good restaurants.

Weather is not of primary concern in Singapore; rather concentrate on when the Chinese dragon roars in January or February bringing in the New Year, or when Buddha's birth is celebrated with fireworks and night markets on Vesak Day in May, or if you have the stomach for it, Thaipusam in February when devotees honour Lord Subramaniam by performing the grossest acts of body piercing that would make even Jim Rose's head spin.
