St Malo Travel Guide for backpackers

Built on a granite rock in the Channel, it is joined to the mainland by a causeway.

There is a certain charm about the town which unfortunately is spoilt by the hordes of tourist buses and passengers engulfing the narrow streets. World War II practically destroyed the entire place, which has since been rebuilt.

DAILY BUDGET in ST MALO - No point in depriving oneself in this charming town. Give yourself a budget of +- US$44.

Explore - The best way to see the town is on foot. Take a walk along the ramparts for the best view of the bay and islets. Some of the walls date back to the 14th century. Begin your walk at Porte St-Vincent.

lle du Grand-Be’ - At low tide take a walk to the lle du Grand-Be’ the site of the tomb of Chateaubriand and check out the view of the Emerald Coast. Breathtaking scenery.

Cathedrale St-Vincent - Admission to the Cathedrale St-Vincent is free. The Romanesque and Gothic architecture is fascinating and includes Renaissance artistry.
