Switzerland Travel Guide for backpackers

There is a lot more to Switzerland than fantastic chocolate and breathtaking mountains, the history of Switzerland dates back to the year 1291. One can do almost anything here from bungee jumping to mountain climbing to yodelling. People tend to get stuck on the common attractions for e.g. chocolate and cheese but we must not forget that Switzerland has won more Nobel prizes than any other place on earth. The landscape cannot be compared to any other on earth.

Basel Geneva Lausanne Zurich
Bern Interlaken Lugano

Chateau de Chillon - The castle dates back to the 11th century. This is without a doubt worth checking out; you can go around exploring the courtyards, towers, and Dungeons.

Geneva - This is Switzerland’s 3rd largest city and is home to ample museums and a perfect starting point for Alp climbs.

Jungfrau Region - Perfect for trail hikes and panoramic views, you can take a rail trip through Eiger and Monch, which once again offers perfect scenery.

Lake Thun - Once again castles are the main attraction here, but if you are under the misconception that one looks like the other, you are sadly mistaken, as you will find out after spending a day here.

Lucerne - Well this is what one sees in your minds eye when the name Switzerland pops up, Glacier gardens, crystal clear lakes, and meadows full of edelweiss.

DAILY BUDGET in SWITZERLAND - You are going to need about US$60 per day but it is very well worth the extra cost. Normally camping is a good way to save but camping in the snow does not sound like a good plan, but not all is lost you can find decent accommodation starting anywhere between US$9-11 and food will set you back US$6-11 a day. (That is not including the money you spend on chocolate)

Well February is party time as that is when they have their carnivals but if it is history, culture and sightseeing you are after, then come during June to September as this is summer and the most pleasant time to walk around and explore. If you are on a budget then coming around April-May and late-September-October, will suit your pocket, as that is when prices drop and accommodation is plentiful. Late November is the time for skiing and snow sports and if you hang around long enough, you can experience Christmas in a whole new way.
