Tenerife Travel Guide for backpackers

With its predictably sunny weather and the wide variety of landscapes, Tenerife attracts millions of tourists every year. Most visitors largely content themselves with lazy days on the beach, but there are plenty of opportunities to be more active and go surfing, windsurfing, sailing, diving or deep-sea fishing.

The island is relatively small and you can take a hike or a bike, and explore the island on a day-trip. There are a number of hiking trails, climbingareas and dirt roads for mountain biking.

DAILY BUDGET in TENERIFE - The Canary Islands are relatively cheap places to visit, so a daily budget of US$40 will be sufficient to have a great time in Tenerife. If you want to stay in more luxurious hotels and dine at the top hotels, a daily budget of around US$90 would be enough.

Loro Parque - Opened in 1972 and still growing every year, Loro Parque is a wonderfull day out for everyone. The park is home to around 350 types of birds and a great emphasis is placed on conservation. There are also several breeds of animals, including chimps rescued from photographers and big cats previously owned by magicians.

The Aqua Park - A great day out in Playa de las Americas for everyone, young and old. The park has many water slides and rides for every age. There is also a restaurant, swimming pools and sun loungers if you just want to lay in the sun and relax.

Las Canadas - The Caldera de las Canadas are a ring of small volcanoes, which are the remants of the original Tenerife volcano that errupted explosively and destroyed itself. The park in which it is located offers the most incredible views of the lunar-like landscape. Parts of some movies, including the "Planet of the Apes" have been filmed here.
