United Kingdom Travel Guide for backpackers

This island of rain and mist is filled with history and her people have distant links with lands throughout the world. No longer is it a dreaming, gentle, place of quiet village squares and passing vagabonds. Its wandering minstrels today are raving, hard rock bands, its cities fast-paced giants with towering concrete and glass structures, and quiet country lanes have become immense multi-laned highways. Britain is a power to be reckoned with and still has influence on countries far outside its borders, and people who say it like it is. It is also packed with icons and relics from its past, and still has some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet.

England Northern Ireland Scotland

London - Ancient and filled with landmarks that are known throughout the world, such as Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and the Tower, it is an exhilarating city with a heart-stopping pace and nightlife that has no equal.

Stonehenge - Five thousand years of mystery are hidden in the great stones brought from South Wales to serve a purpose no-one understands today.

Ireland - Verdant green fields, delicate wildflowers, and rolling hills make up the countryside of Ireland, but it is also a land that has seen great fighting and 'troubles', and the north of the country is still not at ease. For all this, its people are warm and welcoming and one night in an Irish pub will leave caring very little for any political upheavals.

Wales - Romantic castles and looming black mills, rolling moorlands and ugly industrialization, melodious male-voice choirs.and brawling rugby players; this is Wales with all its contradictions. It is also a country with great outdoor activities and festivals, and perfect for hiking or cycling.

Scotland - This, God love it, is the country of whisky, the 'water of life', ever to be known as 'Scotch', the bagpipes, haggis and fly fishing. It is also the home of St Andrews Golf Club. 'Nuff said.

DAILY BUDGET in UNITED KINGDOM - Travelling through Britain costs vary, with a daily budget ranging between US$65 and US$125 just keeping your head above water, and the cities being the most expensive.

It is advisable not to go to Britain in July and August, when the crowds are overwhelming, spring (May to September) is possibly the best time with the least rain, and in autumn the countryside is a riot of colours. Depending on what floats your boat there are events such as the Trooping of the Colour, celebrating the Queen's birthday on the 2nd June, or the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales held in Wales in early August, or one of Scotland's greatest celebration, Hogmanay, a grand greeting of the New Year.
