Hawaii Travel Guide for backpackers

There is so much to say about this breathtakingly beautiful place. The people are friendly, the vibe is energizing, and the views are spectacular. From pitch black volcanic sand beaches to the sparkle of brilliantly white sands, awe-inspiring volcanoes, seductive grass skirts and the sweetly scented frangipani, everything about this place is magical. Hawaii is an island that still has canoe races, waving palms and an idyllic life style with modern convenience, and is 'The Aloha State'.

Honolulu Kauai Maui

Surfing - Let me start by saying "WOW” this is where surfing was born and nurtured until it grew into the world wide sport it is today. With crystal clear waters and six foot waves, this is the one place you must surf and if you do not know how to, try body-boarding, even if you don't do either you will still enjoy the beaches and the people.

The Aloha Flea Market - Make this your first Hawaiian shopping experience, for everything from jewelry to clothes and of course curios, you will be completely shopped out after this experience. Typical flee market charm and ambiance.

Diamond Head - If the mood to hike strikes you, make an attempt at the 760-foot trail, once you reach the top there is a 360 degree view if Waikiki, Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean, completely awesome. And of course you must take water (or liquids of some sort) and wear comfy shoes.

Maui - Jungles, waterfalls, and humpback whales, what more could anyone ask for. Maybe some extinct volcanoes, great beaches, and some of the worlds best windsurfing? Maui has it all.

Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park - In this magical place you can find ancient temples, burial sites and wonderful relics of a time long past, as well as great snorkeling, swimming and diving.

DAILY BUDGET in UNITED STATES - With meals running at approximately $5 to $10, and lodging in the region of $25 to $50, if you are prepared to camp, cook your own meals, and hitchhike or grab a bus, then you could just squeeze by on $30 a day, but go for private accommodation, some decent meals, and a little nightclubbing and your costs could rise to about $100 per day.

Hawaii's busiest tourist season is in winter from December to February, and if you need to cut your costs as much as possible it is a good idea to travel to Hawaii from April to mid-December when discounts for accommodation are as high as 30%. If, however, you take your surfing seriously, then you will want to be part of the action on Oahu's North Shore around Christmas. For windsurfing or diving the waters are at their best in July through August at the height of summer. In September the Queen Liliuokalani Outrigger Canoe Race takes place and is a glorious event that features the world's biggest long-distance outrigger paddling challenge.
