| United States Travel Guide for backpackers |

| Welcome to the USA, you have entered into a make believe world entwined with reality. This is truly a country of diversity, excitement and adventure. From cowboys on the plains of Texas to the sophistication of the Hollywood stars and not forgetting the African Americans in all their glory, the USA has it all. The landscape is made up from snowcapped mountains to vast desert plains to lush green fields. Most of the country has been used to film one thing or the other so don’t be alarmed if you get that “I have been here before” feeling. |

 |
Washington DC - Sightseeing here is made easy by the vast collection of museums, fauna and flora, ethnography (study of human culture) and of course, the political arena, in this historical place.
Los Angeles - If standing in the footprints of the rich and famous is what makes your boat float, then LA is the place for you, home to Disneyland, movie stars and junk food.
New Orleans - With a motto like laissez les bons temps rouler ('let the good times roll'), what more needs to be said about this fun loving city.
Boston - The "Athens of America" is how this city has been described, crammed with colonial buildings, tall glass skyscrapers and 19th century mansions makes this “heaven” for the history monger.
Black Hills National Forest - Is the perfect landscape for hiking, biking and all those other energy stealing activities. Be sure to check out the gigantic statue carved into the mountainside of Crazy horse (the Sioux leader famous for orchestrating the demise of General George Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn). |

DAILY BUDGET in UNITED STATES - Being a backpacker you are sure to know about the cost effectiveness of camping instead of staying in hotels and of course making your own meals gives you that extra dollar or two at the end of the day. Your Lodging should not be more than roughly US$15-65 per day and chow being about US$4-13, so you can survive on US$50-60 per day. |
If crowds and vibe is what your heart desires then summer (June, July and August) is defiantly the time to go, however if it is time for yourself then I suggest you plan your trip around December/January/February, that is when the crowds are all at home tucked up tight.
Now that you have decided which season suites you, you must now decide which activity you want to be part of. There is the super bowl (dec to late Jan) that brings the whole of America to a stand still, then there is the famous New Orleans' Mardi Gras, in February or March, and of course the Kentucky Derby is raced in Louisville in May.
