Verona Travel Guide for backpackers

Verona, the setting for Shakespeare's famous Romeo and Juliet, is the largest city of the mainland, Veneto. Strategically settled by the Romans it serves as the crossing between the major routes from Austria and Germany to central Italy. Verona is not as crowded as Venice but is a major tourist centre and there is much in evidence of it's long illustrious past. Roman antiquities are unsurpassed north of Rome. Keep to the inner city to experience the medieval past of this lovely city.

DAILY BUDGET in VERONA - Plan for USD80 a day.

San Giorgio in Braida - the best collection of arts in a church. Teatro Romana nearby, is a first century theatre.

Sant'Anastasia - The largest church in Verona, started in 1290, is essentially Gothic.

Castelvecchio - Verona's stronghold for many centuries. The castle abd it's contents are fascinating to see.
