| Victoria Falls Travel Guide for backpackers |

| Mosi-Oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders, is the local name for the Victoria Falls, straddling the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia. This phenomenal body of water plunges over a gorge that is 328 feet high and over a mile wide, and is one of the Wonders of the Natural World. The Victoria Falls village has sadly fallen prey to the greedy grasp of tourism and what was once a delightful little place is now over-developed and has lost its charm. Nevertheless, it is worth visiting to see the biggest waterfall in the world. |

DAILY BUDGET in VICTORIA FALLS - You had better watch out, you’d better beware, they’re after your cash and they really don’t care…(to be sung to the tune of Santa Klaus is Coming Tonight). No, no, it’s not really like that, pretty close though, because what could be a very inexpensive trip at US$15 a day for hostel fees and self-catering, can become disastrously expensive with visits to the casino, buying curios and artefacts, and living it up at the nightspots or staying in one of the hotels. |
 |
Bush Walks – If you are part of a crowd take a walk along the riverbank and check out hippos eyeing you from the water, but remember, hippos account for more human deaths than any other creature on land, so be careful.
Bird watching – Look out for the magnificent Fish Eagles that live in this region, or the multi-coloured Lilac Breasted Roller as it rolls and plunges mid-air in its dance of passion, and see the brilliant red Bishop Bird calling his wives from the reeds.
Sunsets and Lunar Rainbows – Ma Nature doesn’t charge a red cent for the most incredible sights of all with her magic sunsets over the Zambesi River, and the moonlit rainbow over the Falls.
|

Sadza Ne Nyama – The local staple diet of stiff porridge and stewed meat is cheap, filling, and very tasty.
The Kingdom - at Victoria Falls is a magnificent hotel complex that offers a Spur Steak Ranch, Panarottis Pizza/Pasta Restaurant and a fast food area.
Local Vendors – Try some of the local delicacies such as the dried fish, or dried Mopani worms, or open-flame roasted mealies (corn on the cob).
|

Explorers - Victoria Falls Village, meet up with backpacking mates and outdo them with your tales of hairy adventures, while knocking back a few before going on to the nightclub.
Wild Thing - Located in The Kingdom, this nightclub is an all night experience, with eager young things shakin’ it, and forgetting entirely that back home they are quiet, respectable little librarians.
X-plosion - The new nightclub in town, located in the industrial area, has an open-air dance floor, which is a magical experience in the wild African bush.
