| Wellington is the capital of New Zealand in every way, and is cosmopolitan and funky, giving travellers art of every culture and festivals happening every month, a nightlife of note, and a choice of food that is to die for, For backpacker's and other ‘light on the moola' travellers Wellington is easily explored on foot with forests and cliffs to roam around, and a spectacular harbour. Quite apart from the fact that Wellington is the place for cheap accommodation and cheap chow, it also is filled with history and interesting architecture. |

DAILY BUDGET in WELLINGTON - Backpackers can enjoy New Zealand on a daily budget of about US$35 if they make use of the hostels and do their own catering; there are also the options of motor camps and motels, where guests do their own cooking. |

Wellington Harbour - Windsurfing, kayaking, or a guided trip around the harbour at night when the harbour lights shine in the water and the world is your oyster, all of this, and much more can be found in Wellington Harbour.
Botanic Gardens, cable car and the Carter Observatory - For a free dose of peace and tranquility, spend a few hours roaming the rolling hills of the Botanic Gardens. If you have overdone it a rave the previous night and can't face the climb, then for $3 return you can take the cable-car for mind-blowing views over the city. The Carter National Observatory offers some entertainment as well.
Rimutaka Range - Located east of Wellington, Rimutaka Range is a forest park where there are a number of bushwalks, or if you go to Lower Hutt there is a great gallery on Maori Treasure.
Te Papa - National museum of New Zealand. Give yourself at least half a day, good on rainy and sunny days. Excellent museum of New Zealand maori history.

The Catch - Located at 48 Courtenay Place, this inexpensive sushi bar provides take-aways and sit-down meals. The set menu offers meals and side orders for about $10 to $18.
Krazy Lounge - Located at cnr Cuba St & Ghuznee St, and serving curries, pasta, and grills, from about $10 upwards at this trendy café/restaurant has an excellent vibe the place stay open to the early hours for drinks or coffee.
Café Neo - Located at 132 Willis St, this is the place for big serving of great food, and the atmosphere is welcoming, there service brilliant.

The Opera - Located on the cnr Courtenay Place & Blair St, DJ's and partying pretty much sum up the atmosphere of this smooth operation, with live bands on Thursdays and Jazz on Fridays.
The Fat Ladies Arms - Located at Dixon St, a hangout for all students, backpackers, and assorted reprobates, where you can get down and dirty in an all night drinking session.
La Luna Club - Located at Oaks Complex, Dickson St, this is the in-place for those who enjoy pool, hip-hop and bands.
Molley Mallones - Great Irish bar, friendly people, Great bands
