Zaragoza Travel Guide for backpackers


Zaragoza was founded 2000 years ago by the Romans, when they conquered Spain. It keeps the history of all the different races that lived and contributed to the development of the city, the Iberus, Romans, Arabs, and Jewish. There are many interesting monuments to see, that are dedicated to its past.

The peole of Zaragoza are warm and kind and make any tourist feel right at home. With its great wine tasting, supurb cuisine and beautiful attractions, Zaragoza is a city well worth a visit.
 

DAILY BUDGET in ZARAGOZA - You can get by on a daily budget of US$45, if you mainly dine at the tapas bars and hang out in pubs and still have a good time. If you want try out the restaurants and nightclubs, you should rather work with a daily budget of around US$90.

Basilica of the Pilar - This cathedral has different construction and ornamental styles. It was raised on an original Mozarabic church and was converted into the Romanesque temple. It can be seen from almost any place in the city and it looks just amazing when you enter Zaragoza.

Roman Walls - The Roman city Caesaraugusta (today's Zaragaza) was strongly walled. The walled perimeter exceeded 3000 meters and it was reinforced in the 3rd century during the Barbican invasions. All parts of Roman Walls that are visible today are preciselly from that time.

Basilica De Nuestra Senora del Pilar - Its massive Baroque structure defines the skyline with brightly colored tiled domes. Inside the frescoes are by Goya, Gonzales Velazquez, and Francisco Bayeau. Two bombs (which are on display) were dropped on the basilica during the Civil War but failed to explode.

El Cachirulo - A typical Aragonese building in brick with wrought iron balconies on the road to Logrono, this restaurant offers fine regional cuisine and wines. Migas (fried bread crumbs with grapes and other ingredients), tender grilled lamb and blood sausage are all house specialties.

Taberna Al-Kareni - Located at 14 Don Tobaldo, this is a great restaurant where you can eat delicious couscous and other spanish spicialities. The decor is amazing, the food is great and the service excellent.

La Tasquilla de Don Pedro - This good 'bar a tapas' is found in Cinegio street, and serves a range of different tapas, like Tortilla made of 12 eggs. For great, cheap food, this place is highly recommended.

El Cantor de Jazz - This venue offers a regular program of Blues, Jazz and R&B. Its tasteful and understated interior decor is made up of musical instruments and a tribute to the first talking picture, The Jazz Singer, from which the place takes its name.

La Casa del Loco - By offering an interesting and varied program of live concerts every Thursday night from 9:30pm, this popular music venue in Zaragoza's old town manages to attract large audiances of all ages. You'll hear a mix of Spanish pop, funk and sounds from the 1960's. The interior has been decorated in attractive retro circus style and has two bars to choose from.
