For what this place cost, i felt we were more than well off. Definitely a whole lot better than what i expected, especially after reading the review. The counter women were really friendly and always helpful in my case. Had no issues, slept peacefully. It's a place designed for a good night's sleep and to relax a bit. Not a place you might want to hang out all day (though plenty of people loved hanging out all day.). Highly recommend it.

I am from Hong Kong,China. So here is an opinion from an asian. I have been a female backpackers for years, and have never been into a hostel as irresponsible as this. I reserved this hostel with deposits paid days before my arrival . In the confirmation I specified that transport would delay, and estimated to arrive at 9 p.m... I arrived at 10 p.m. and there was already no bed for me. The receptionist at first claimed that she did not received my confirmation. When I showed her my reservation and confirmation , she suddenly claimed that I came late. No bed was available anymore. After all the fuss, it was already 11 p.m., so I asked if she would help me on finding any nearby hostel that may provide shelter for the night. She threw me Lonely Planet and said Find by yourself!. Outraged! I am really fed with the attitude of this hostel. I understand this hostel located in Bugis, an interesting area. But all area in Singapore are well connected by the MRT transport system. In one of the safest cities in the world, location is definitely not a concern.

stayed a few nights.. basically disappointed after reading all the hoola. yup, islam has it early call to prayer, 5:30am or so. A bummer for a vacationer. good for a night stay so ya can see the immediate area but then move on. no private rooms as advertised. Private romms are separated by high wall and share all the silient night noises and odors. no ac until 9 pm. can not keep cool in daytime. ah well. moved on and will not return. much ado about nothing! to qoute the Bard.

Frankly I was attracted by the fact that this was a "Bed and Breakfast" rather than just a hostel, but it wasn't much more than an ambient hostel (yes, the furniture was a bit nicer than your average hostel). That said, things were hardly luxurious... nor was there much more than a bed... breakfast really is a joke, at least where I come from - hardly a breakfast at all, certainly nothing like what you would get from an actual bed and breakfast. I wish that I had read the review prior to staying here... there were local hotels that actually cost less than this place did for two of us, and would have provided a lot more privacy - and for those that are interested, a decent breakfast can be bought from a nearby restaurant for about SIN$3 (and I do mean more than a piece of toast and a coffee :)

Stayed here a night, and decided to keep moving on. Location is actually not very good. It's wedged a fair distance from Little India (not really walking distance), and several bus stops from Chinatown, or Orchard. Quite a walk to either the MRT or bus lines, and the nearby food is pretty lean on the choices. Also, there's a 5:30am Muslim loud speaker prayer that goes for at least 15 minutes. It's really a crappy way to be woken up. Pros: The beds and pillows are great. Decently clean...but hard to tell with the dim lighting. Everyone is supposed to keep their shoes off and downstairs, but seriously...there's a lot of funk with so many travellers without shoes on. Free internet in the cafe lobby. Reasonably friendly staff. Cons: Location, Early Morning Wake Up call from the LoudSpeaker at the Temple right outside, No windows in the dormitory area which makes it look like Nighttime ALL THE TIME, A/C is not very good - rely on ceiling fans which haven't been dusted in I don't know how long...they actually had large dust ball flying off the fans. Personal observation: Overall, ambience. I think they're trying to go for a laid back euro-cafe thing.... But I'm not feeling it. Bed and Breakfast is a bad description. It's a basic place to lay your head down and get some rest. The security is just so-so, and if you're thinking of getting a private room, it's actually just a partition wall. Stick with the dormitory section, and don't trust leaving any valuables behind. This place is not for everyone.

Jonorowe, I actually fully agree with you that it is a place that looks cosy, comfortable and neat – that was what attracted my attention in the first place, and made me walk in to ask for information. I work for a travel guidebook company and wanted to place them in one of our books! The look and location were not at all the point of my contention. The point was the front desk service failed miserably. For what reasons, I do not know, and now do not really care to find out (the hostel never got back to me, despite my emailing them directly). Thanks to Sarah for the explanation though. It does help throw some light on the behaviour. Jocelyn

If you've ever been to China, you'd understand (yet still be frustrated by) this woman's reaction. Most mainland Chinese react to requests for info in this manner... Simply typical, unfortunately. Sam's looks great and is in quite the location.

By far the best place I have ever stayed on my trip so far - very clean, very cosy and Kevin and Sam were helpful and polite beyond the call of duty. Jocelyn - maybe you should actually try staying in the accomodation before reviewing it.

Good for you, Bryne. Yes, the Chinese woman may have been having an exceptionally bad day, or perhaps perfect courtesy is extended only to foreigners, for I sent this same letter directly to the hostel's email address, and have to date never received an explanation or an apology.

In response to Jocelyn's review I would suggest either staying there or reading the many reviews by other people who have stayed there to see why this place has quite rightly been rated as not only the best hostel in Singapore, but the second best in Asia. I assure her that she was extremely unlucky to find anything other than the perfect courtesy that was extended to me.

I am thoroughly disgusted by the treatment I received from your hostel yesterday afternoon. I happened to walk by your hostel on one of my field checks for a Singapore travel guide yesterday, and it attracted my attention and the thought that it might possibly make an appearance in one of our guides. I walked in, and simply asked, without identifying myself, whether I could have a namecard. The young Chinese woman behind the counter uttered a single "No." I asked whether she had a flyer or a brochure, then. She said, again, "No." I asked, then, whether there might be a phone number or a website where one could have access to information. The woman maintained her quizzical look, and this time asked whether I might be intending to visit the cafe sometime. Puzzled, I said, "But you have rooms as well, right?" And she told me, "Yes (pause) ... What do you need the info for?" Irritated, I let on that I work for a travel guidebook company and the info might be useful. To which she replied - "Oh. You can leave your namecard, and I'll ask the person in charge to call you back. That's what travel guidebook companies usually do." I didn't bother to ask further. Is this the way you normally run your (new) business, I cannot help wondering, by burning bridges so carelessly? Does it even matter what the inquirier's background is? Whether the inquirer is local or foreign, whether he works for a travel books company or a travel agent or is a freelance writer, or whether he simply just has friends he would like to introduce a business establishment to ... I would have thought any of these possibilities would excite a business owner. I'm simply appalled.
