I stayed here for a week and found the staff friendly, a safe atmosphere and some great food. The position near to the beach is great.

Rio is the world capital of party and what better place to base yourself than Mellow Yellow. We were supposed to stay 3 nights but stayed for 9! Everyone we met was great and i'm not sure what other reviewers are talking about in dissing the security - we used the safety deposit boxes and they did exactly what they say on the tin! Recommended.

this hostel is up there with being one of the best in rio. If ur not into partying dont stay here. The staff is cool and they arrange all types of trips around rio, from hanglinding, favela tours, to futeball games to given u the hotest clubs and bars to check out.. The price is cheep but u will have to use a community shower, beside that a great place to meet travelers and to get a glimpse of cidade marvelouso

Not only was i Mugged not far outside of the hostel, and they really didn't care. But I left a VERY sentimental Item AT the front desk. I called, and emailed several times, and they really didn't care AT all. I couldnt even get them to put it in a safe place until a friend came back to the hostel so they could mail it to me. Great place, bad employees.

I realize that the guy that steal people is Zema from the staff and seems nobody knows. Poor place to stay. Moved to another hostel in Botafogo which is much much safer called Ace Café. It is easier to get inside a prison than someone been stolen at this place. They are very reliable and cameras record 24 hours what´s going on inside the hostel. They have never had a broken locker! Family atmosphere. Open minded people runs this hostel. Also there is a great bar/nightclub downstairs to have a few beers

I agree with the post about the football. We paid 40 real for a ticket, which would have been no more than 10 real face value. To add insult to injury, when we were given our passes they had COMPLIMENTARY stamped on them. So it was an expensive coach journey!

The main memory I will take away from this place is the awful, awful music they insisted on blaring out from 9am until 11pm. I'm no fuddy duddy, but when I say blare I mean blare. We had two speakers stuck right outside our door, as did most other rooms, meaning it was impossible to get even a minute's respite. And the soundtrack - surely nobody could enjoy a selection that ranged from tedious trance to europop to The Smiths? TURN IT OFF!!! Oh, and when the tunes finally DO stop, the cleaners arrive at 4am and shout to each other at the top of their voices. Nice food though.

I thought this was a great hostel. Extremely well run with friendly atmosphere and staff. This is one of the few hostels in South America which actually upholds the principal of the customer being right. However, I reckon their football trip is a rip off. I recommend taking the tube with a group of people. The only advantage you may glean from the expensive trip is that you avoid any interaction with locals after the game ( which is unlikly to be a problem).

The best place I can so far remember, concerning staying in hostels around the world. And the staff (Letizia, Fernanda, Demetrio, Felipe, Rosangela, Michele, Pablo, the great Chef and the ever-so-helpful maintenance man) are among the nicest persons ever.

I´ve been stolen inside the hostel for someone, maybe the fellow travellers or probably the staff. I changed to another place which I felt much safer.

This place is by far the best I stopped in in South America... brand new, great atmosphere, loads of free stuff (internet, breakfast, bar promos) not to mention the spa jacuzzi. Very chilled, and very safe... check it out when you are in Rio

Welcome to Mellow Yellow, Rio’s newest, biggest and best backpackers. The location couldn’t be better. One block from the beach, next to the metro and all main bus routes, on an exclusive little cul-de-sac right in the heart of Rio – Copacabana. Mellow Yellow has been created by backpackers for backpackers. We provide everything you’d expect from a first class hostel and much more besides. FACILITIES FREE INTERNET Brand new computers with high speed broadband connection, webcams and microphones. FREE BREAKFAST Great selection of juices, coffee, bread, ham, cheese, jams, eggs, cakes and Brazilian fruits. SECURITY Safety deposit boxes for all. 24/7 security in what is one of, if not the safest neighbourhood in Rio. LANGUAGE CLASSES We offer Portuguese and Spanish classes everyday. AIRPORT PICKUP Let us know your flight number and one of our staff will be waiting for you at the arrivals lounge. TOURS Rios best tours available at the best prices. CREDIT CARDS We accept all major international cards as payment. SURF / VOLLEYBALL / CAPOEIRA / SAMBA LESSONS SURF BOARD / BIKE HIRE LAUNDRY SERVICE AND EVERTHING ELSE YOU’D EXPECT FROM A FIRST CLASS HOSTEL…………… How to get there? From the bus station Best option is to take a radio taxi from just outside the bus station. You pay a fixed fee at the counter. Will cost about 17 Reais to get you here. Another option is to take the ´Real´ Bus from in front of the bus station. It costs 4 Reais, & the drivers speak english. Walk past the taxi rank just outside the station & wait for the bus at the side of the road opposite. They run every 15 minutes and will stop on the main beach road (avendida atlantica). Ask the driver to stop at the ´Copacabana Palace´ hotel. Walk two blocks away from the beach on ´Rua Rodolfo Dantas´ onto ´Rua Barato Ribeira´. Take a left and then you´ll find us on the next street on the left. Alternatively, walk over to the other side of the station and walk across the road, past the taxis, and catch any bus to copacabana, most of which run along ´rua barato ribeiro´. Look out for ´Arcoverde´ Metro station on your right. Our road is the next on the left. From the Aiport Again, the best option would be to take a taxi. Depending on the time, it should cost between 30-40 Reais. A cheaper option is the ´Real´ bus. Walk out of the arrivals lounge, take a right past the waiting taxis and look out for the aiport bus stop. At the time of writing this cost around 7 Reais. (See bus station info for instructions where to get off the bus)
