The first day of the rest of my life...... in Cape Town - South Africa
by Colin | Date >
2004-08-12 | Country : South Africa | City : Cape Town
| Area : Western Cape |
| Whenever I traveled I went with the thought of finding the perfect place to live and certain conditions had to be met, which included, Sunny skies, by the beach, possibility of work and plenty of good looking women. I didn’t see my future commuting to work in the West End of London.
After a hectic 8 month trip through Africa, and a chance to recover at my cousins house in the leafy suburbs of Johannesburg for a couple of months. I did work there, but couldn’t get a permit from the authorities, didn’t like Jo,berg anyway and people would say you’ll love Cape Town, so not to miss the chance got my cousin to drop me by the side of the road in Soweto to start hitching. That was a bit of a shock, being used to rural Africa, not thousands of little tin cans with wisps of smoke rising. That night I got as far as Christiana a town on the border of the then Transvaal and Free State. Now I was led to believe that white people spoke English and Black people Afrikaans, thinking it was Zulu or whatever, so imagine my consternation when I got to this town and found Whites speaking something sounding like Dutch. Had a confused sleep that night in the station. Thought I might as well catch the night train as it came through at 4am. Arrived in the most stunning town I’ve ever seen, then took the bus to Sea Point and just fell in love, checked into a guest house, went up Table Mountain then strolled along the beach front, met a girl, she invited me to a party that night and from that party my social life was set up for years to come.
Who says dreams don’t come true!
