Greeted by a mouse in my hostel room!! - Canada
by Roxanne Levy | Date > 2006-07-24 | Country : Canada | City : Vancouver | Area :
This was it, my great adventure, I was leaving hectic London to live in Vancouver for a year. I was excited as I knew that I'd encounter lots of new experiences. I travelled a lot and before I left, I jokingly mentioned to my friend that I always ended up sitting next to the screaming baby on the plane and I bet i'd get that again, hoping that this wouldn't be the case. Oh my god! I must have jinxed myself as that's exactly what happened! In fact initially I wasn't sat next to the baby at all. There was a lady sitting next to me and there was a spare seat next to her. This air hostess then asked the lady next to me if she would mind moving so this lady and her baby could have the seats! Bloody hell I couldn't believe it! why didn't she consult me?I didn't pay to sit next to some screaming child/baby for 9 hours!! How selfish of her, she clearly hadn't thought things through properly! Why don't I ever get seated next to some gorgeous man whose intelligent, charismatic, funny, interesting.... that never happens to me!! I must have a sign above my head that says don't put anyone cute or interesting next to her.Actually, I think they should start up some sort of plane dating/matching service. Before you check in, they should hand single travellers a form, this would ask you lots of questions about the type of person you would like to have seated next to you.. at least you would have some say in your travelling companion! I think it would work well and who knows, maybe a few marriages/couples would arise from this!! Anway after 9 hours of relentless baby screaming, crying and crawling under my seat and grabbing my bag, me and anything else I put down, I was ready to cry and scream myself. They should have a separate compartment for scraming kids and babies and annoying people.... I hadn't had any sleep at all. I was so happy to get off that plane I was almost bouncing along the aisles. By the time I reached my hostel I was beyond exhausted and not in the best of moods. I'd treated myself to my own room as I didn't fancy co-habiting with 10 people in a room on my first night! I wanted peace and quite, my own space and to do whatever I wanted without people coming into my room, banging doors, getting drunk and whatever else they felt like doing!! which incidently has happened before. In Australia, I returned to my shared hostel room to find a couple 'at it' did they care, no they took one look at me and carried on, making all the noise they wanted, even though it was my room too! Anyway, finally I was ready to go to sleep and have wonderful dreams....Yeah right! that would have been too good to be true wouldn't it! At 3am, I awoke to the sound of a scratching, scutling noise. What can that be I wondered? In a dazed stupor, I switched on the light. the noise seemed to be coming from behind the bin... So I moved the bin and this huge evil rodent started scuttling around the room. My room! How dare he come and visit without my permission! I screamed and ran out of my dorm to the reception. I stood there in my pygamas and started to rant to the guy who was working on the reception desk. I must have looked like this crazy woman as I insisted he came with me to my room and got rid of the mouse. There was no way I was going back there on my own. I know i'd come to canada on my own for this big adventure, but didn't think my first friend would be a mouse!! We searched for the mouse but he must have decided he had had enough, if I wasn't going to be his friend then he would go somewhere else... I was moved to another room, which as it happens was far far nicer and I even had my own bathroom! So maybe this mouse was sent to me for a reason, he came to see me on purpose so i'd get upgraded. Anyway it did cross my mind that maybe in future I should buy a mouse then I could present him each time I stayed in accommodation, who knows the next time I could get free accommodation! I finally got to sleep. This was my first day of my year in vancouver, what would happen next...... TO BE CONTINUED.....
