Was in Northern England recently and tried the JohnSmith. Loved it and look forward to returning in a few months and resuming my drinking experience with Mr. Smith. Wish I could find it here in the states.

Been a bitter drinker for 43 year and been on john smiths for a few of them, but with john smith smooth you have topped them all.

Tasteless rubbish. I never drink keg bitter and if the only hand pump ale available is John Smith's then I drink lager.

Real ale is garbage I have tried many the only one that is any where near drinkable is Black Sheep therefore I will be staying with John Smiths smooth which in my area {South Yorkshire} is the No.1 BEER second to none

John Smith's Extra Smooth is the best beer (any categories) I've ever tasted. It's smoothness is simply irresistible. Too bad they don't serve it in many pubs in Sweden. I'll have to visit England again soon...

not the worst brew in the world. but theres so much better available for a few extra pennies.. I think John Smiths is summed up by story of my Grandad; he would religously drink Smiths or Worthies for the last 30 odd years (his favourite was the 'original' brown Smiths -not the crapflow green one). For his birthday i drop off a few bottles of St Austell Tribute Ale... "best beer i've ever tasted" he tells me, now he's hooked on the stuff. moral of the story? lets get these old boys off their 'grandad ales' (i.e. fairly tasteless, harmless traditional bitters from the big brewers) and get them on onto some of the fantastic ales coming from the smaller brewers!!! there's quality ales all over the UK, go get 'em!

There should be a '0' on the drop down. John Smiths beer is totally tasteless, obviously better than American beers like Bud, I can see it being quite a revelation to Bud drinkers (pity them) but honestly, I would rather drink... Fosters lager!!! Try Samual Smiths instead - you will NOT regret it! :)

Brilliant. Very nice, and for those saying 'go and try REAL beer', i have done (Pedigree-Yum / Directors - Mmmm etc). John Smiths is equally as nice to drink - if it is cold. If you take your time with it it goes warm and a bit weird.

This is by far the best beer in the entire world, and I have tried almost all of them. They need to get rid of their importer in the U.S. and get one that has a desire to actually promote the product.

I agree with the comments of Pat Kingsbury and Tony Smith. I've just downed a can - cool and wet is one thing, but tasteless is another.

The founders of John Smiths Brewery back in 1758 must be turning in their graves ,Magnet Ale was a nice beer but unfortunately like a lot of breweries that have either merged or been taken over by larger brewing companies John Smiths Ales have suffered in quality. How anyone who drinks beer for the taste can call John Smiths Smooth a beer is beyond me. I understand shelf life is important to an innkeeper but you can get cask conditioned ales which give taste as well as a similar look to a so called smooth beer, theakstons for example, but I personally find John Smiths Smooth tastless and would not wash my feet in it. If I could give it less than 1 I would. Long live real ale

Being a lager and pilsner man myself, I don't often drink or particularly care for the dark ales or bitters. On a recent vacation to England I made it a point to sample all the brews at the local pubs and came away loving John Smith's Extra Smooth. I just wish I could find it here in the States!!

I am worried by most of the reviewers above. John Smith's is not, in any way shape or form, a great ale. John Smith's Original (with the brown background to the logo), whether from can or a proper handpump, is pretty drinkable, probably rating a "6". BUT this is not the John Smith's Bitter you will encounter (and I'm guessing not the one people are reviewing here). That is a rather different John Smith's (with a green background to the logo). And it's dreadful. The "can with a widget" is an invention of the devil, and the tapstream bitter is even worse. What taste there is just gets murdered, and you get left drinking cold, lifeless froth. Real ale is the way to go. Support your local brewers. Don't put up with stuff like this just because the big brewing combines make sure it's all most of the chain bars will serve.

Oh dear Oh dear. When will they learn. Try some "REAL" Ale - Some Copper Dragon or Moorhouses and then you'll really know proper beer.
