Saku Originaal - One of the world's best when..

| Having a tall, cool Saku Originaal draught at a summer cafe in the Raekoja Plats of Tallinn, Estonia's old city is pretty near heaven. Better still, an Originaal with a nice meal and a second floor window seat view of Katariina's passage from Contravento Restaurant. I rank Saku Originaal up there with the world's best national beers because in its native environment it excels. Drinking a Guinness at an Irish pub in Tallinn or Washington, DC is nice, but it's not the same as enjoying a Guinness stout draught and a shepherd's pie at Fagan's in north Dublin. Likewise, Chimay is nice no matter where you are, but it's best when consumed at a little bistro in Brussels. In terms of imported bottled brews, Saku Originaal generally tastes better than Beck's or St. Pauli Girl, but is inconsistent. Sometimes it tastes almost like a fresh draught, and other times tastes like it was brewed with Washington, DC tap water. All kidding aside, I still recommend Saku Originaal because it's hard to find here in the U.S. outside of the Estonian-American enclaves, and I don't imagine many people are willing to travel overseas just to taste an Originaal draught. Final note: don't chill it colder than 42 degrees Fahrenheit like you might for an average lager because that will ruin the flavor and the smoothness. |
