Smithwicks - Rediculously good ale!
RATING > 9 - by Emma | Type : Ale | Country : United States | Date > 2005-07-25
I look forward to a better taste because my tongue is still enjoying the sensation. You can get it in Maine - so it will soon be elsewhere!

Smithwick's happens to be an Irish beer produced in Kilkenny. Maybe it is produced under licence in the U.S. as well but it is still an Irish beer!!!!!!!!!

Made by the fine people at guinness, it is truly a great import. It is beginning to be easily avalible in NYC, so I'm sure the rest of the country isnt far behind. Lots of flavor, and not as thick as its cousin

Discovered Smithwick's on a trip to Dublin about a year ago and loved it. Guinness is terrific in its home country and it's almost worth it to go just to try a pint poured the right way from a fresh keg, but it was Smithwick's, which I'd never heard of before the trip, that was my favorite. When I got back, I found out it was going to start being sold in the US. A St. Patrick's Day miracle! Its beautiful red-brown color makes it great before you even taste it, and the tasting does not disappoint. Crisp and clean, especially for an ale, but with a full-bodied flavor and nose-filling aroma that makes it surprising to me that they didn't try to blasphemously dub it Guinness Lite for the US market.

Smithwick's has been available here in So Cal for at least the past six months or so. Hard to get, but when you get it, IT'S GOOD!!! It has a light stiffness to the taste, it definitely lets your nose know that it's there, but no bitter nasty aftertaste, nothing negative about the beer whatsoever. I would compare the taste and effects to beers such as a Sam Adams, Heineken (not nearly as strong though), and possibly Killians, but with a brighter taste and odor to it.

Was able to drink a couple pints of Smithwicks in Coronado. It was the first time I had it but it is oh so smooth. I was there on business from Seattle, I thought we had some good microbrews but this one topped out, understanding it is not a microbrew..... Found it yesterday at Foodmart in Lemoore, Ca. Snatched up a couple of 6's. Stuffed it in the bottom of the cooler for a get together, people were diggin deep for the good stuff. Stashed a few on the side for me later....
